Friday, 6 August 2010 @ 05:44 He could have been a Air Force officer, a football player or even an opera singer. But thankfully for us, Tyler Ward chose something more mainstream; a singer. There are many aspiring artistes, so many YouTube stars, so what makes Tyler stand out? Well, of course he can sing. He's been around for a while. It's a shame more people don't know him. Other than being a Youtube star, he's already well known locally and has even shared the stage with Gavin DeGraw and The Jonas Brothers. Like previously mentioned, a shame that he's not more well-known. Other than doing covers, he's actually done two albums! They're both available on iTunes. Hopefully he'll come out with records for real soon. By what we've seen, he certainly should! It helps that he has his own recording studio to record out of. What makes him fun to watch/listen to is the fact that he gets his friends in on the act and they actually make the song sound better. See how much fun they have! (It's an original too!) Thumbs up for creativity! P.S. Good news for fans, he's rumoured to be in negotiations with a record company. If true, expect to see him at No.1 on the Billboard charts very soon! Wednesday, 4 August 2010 @ 06:03 Sometimes, a band's big break can come as a result of other media. Remember Jet's Are You Gonna Be My Girl blasting throughout Apple's iPod advertisements? And of course, Phanton Planet's California could be heard during the opening credits of the once wildly popular show, The O.C. Actually, it doesn't need to be that be of a deal. Even if your band's song is heard during just one episode of an increasingly popular new show, that could give you exposure months of hard gigging could never achieve. That's what happened to 2AM Club, when their song used in an episode of Pretty Little Liars, a hot new show in the US. Sure this band got a lucky break but that doesn't mean they don't deserve it. 2AM Club blends a mix of seemingly every major genre; pop, hip-hop, new wave, electro and soul to create a unique sound that still sounds positively familiar. All 6 members; singer Marc Griffin, emcee Tyler Cordy, guitarist Matt Reagan, keyboard player Dave Dalton, drummer Ian O'Neill and bassist Matt Warshauer, AKA “Sauce”, bring to the table a collection of different influences sees the band go a variety of ways in their songs. Having said that, these guys are quite something because it is one thing to have all that music, it is quite another to mix it all quite so nicely. The band may have gotten their big break since forming in 2007 from a TV show but we'd like to think that they only managed to get the platform they deserve to showcase their great music. Sunday, 25 July 2010 @ 06:05 Male RnB singers are a dime a dozen. They may not crowd the market but only the best stay on top. They can burst onto the scene but staying power is an elusive quality. Usher and Justin Timberlake have proved that they are elite as they are still around and packing a punch, even after all these years. In recent times, perhaps only Ne-yo can claim to be on an equally successful path. Of the recent group, Jay Sean (already a veteran of the UK music scene) and Justin Bieber look like they can stick around. Others like Colby O' Donis showed promise but have since faded. Needless to say, 21-year old Tino Coury has a tough task on his hands. Actually, he might not have even been in the music industry, had it not been for an injury that prevented a college football scholarship. Good thing he was quite musically inclined. He taught himself the guitar, learning from punk rock songs and moving on to piano, bass and drums. He seems to devote the same discipline that was required of him as an athlete into his music. With the help of supportive parents, he got hold of production software and equipment and eventually learned to produce his own songs. Oh, and being able to sing helps quite a bit. Football's loss is music's gain. Tino is about to break out on merit. Sure, it's hard to stay in but don't count on this young talent on pushing hard to make it. Saturday, 10 July 2010 @ 09:57 There are some out there that might be pessimistic about the Singaporean music scene. Some say that they are poor imitators of their Western counterparts. However, the media plays a part as well. If we look at the right places, there is a lot of talent waiting to be discovered. They are made up of: Fandy Razak - Drums, Khairyl Hashim - Bass, Magdelene Han - Keyboards, Saiful Idris - Vocals/Guitar, Song - Guitar As talent goes, The Great Spy Experiment have lots of it. Influenced by bands like The Killers, Ash & Radiohead,Their sound is a wonderful mix of rock, pop and electronica; unique enough to stand out while current enough to be hip and popular. This band has the potential to break into the mainstream music scene, just like fellow talents Electrico. 2007 was quite a year for the band. They travelled to Austin, Texas to participate in South-by-Southwest Music Festival. In addition, they went to Central Park in New York City, to perform in "Singapore Day". That year also saw the release of their debut album "Flowershowriots". With continued support from fans and a chance to get exposure which would allow the band to gain even more fans and be more prominent in the music scene. If they were to make it big, locally and abroad, The Great Spy Experiment would be a fine representative of Singaporean music. The Great Spy Experiment - A Class "A Love" Affair Sunday, 23 May 2010 @ 07:45 Her music is soft, catchy and has a pretty melody. Valerie Anne Poxleitner is the 23-year-old Canadian girl with the sweet voice. This singer-songwriter uses the sounds of the synthesizer and keytar to make a unique sound for herself. So why do we think music fans will like her? Her music is easy on the ears. Happy and easy. She sings about love, second chances but doesn't make it depressing. Some might say that she sounds too familiar to another artiste out there, Owl City. But there's something about her that is still refreshing. It's refreshing because she's still different from the usual suspects like Pitbull, Lady Gaga & and Akon and other urban radio acts. She's won a couple of awards in her native country but she still hasn't made the breakthrough in America but we believe it's certainly not because of a lack of ability. Her music is something people should definitely pick up on. Thursday, 20 May 2010 @ 08:31 Their music is an assualt on the senses with hard-hiting bass beats mixed with funky electro sounds and suggestive lyrics. Hyper Crush is made up made up of (from L to R) rapper Donny Fontaine, DJ & keytarist Preston Moronie and vocalist Holly Valentine. This Los Angeles based trio are currently doing what any serious band with dreams of making it big would; gigging and touring. Heavily. They have two mixtapes and a self-released album out and even though they are in the midst of working on their 2nd album with Universal Motown, they are under no illusions and are still working hard and staying humble. This can be exemplified in the way the band regularly respond to their fans via their formspring.me and Twitter accounts. They even used some fans in making their latest music videos. This fan-friendliness ensures a loyal fanbase. All the hard work has already reaped minor rewards; the group opened for Lady Gaga on the European leg of her tour. As their name suggests, the group's music is very upbeat & energetic and would not sound out of place in any popular club. With artistes like The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga & 3OH!3 currently on the airwaves, there certainly seems to be a place for Hyper Crush on the radio. If they continue working this hard, hearing a Hyper Crush song on your local radio station will be an inevitability. Saturday, 15 May 2010 @ 00:56 Gone are the days where record companies depended on talent scouts to find the next big thing in music. You don't even need to join talent competitions. These days, the next big thing can be found right in their own homes; posting audios and videos of their talent for all the Internet world to see. Already young superstars like Sean Kingston & Justin Bieber have seen their music careers skyrocket after their online profiles gained a massive following; members of the music industry sat up and took notice, resulting in lucrative recording contracts. The young artistes featured today are talented hopefuls who use the same approach in home of reaping the same rewards. Alyssa Bernal ![]() You could say that this 20 year old San Antonio native is already well on her way to becoming famous. She is currently signed to Star Trak Entertainment and putting the finishing touches on her debut album. But she has done well to stay dedicated to her craft through these years, garnering well over 200 000 subscribers to her YouTube channel. There is no doubt to her talent, with some very good original songs mixed in with her covers of popular songs. Some say she looks similar to High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens. If she sings as well as she looks, then this starlet is poised for a bright future in the music industry. We foresee her making a decent impact in the pop music world. Not convinced or want to find out about more about her? Check out her cover of Lady Gaga's Bad Romance |
